Disease description:

My colleague’s son was hospitalized on the third day of the Lunar New Year due to purpura. We plan to visit him at the hospital soon, but is immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) contagious?

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is generally not contagious. ITP is often triggered by immune-mediated mechanisms, may have a genetic component, and can also be associated with certain medications; therefore, it is not transmissible. The primary treatment goals for ITP are to maintain an adequate platelet count, control bleeding symptoms, and reduce platelet destruction. If a patient’s platelet count remains relatively stable within an acceptable range, close observation along with regular monitoring and follow-up testing may be sufficient. However, if corticosteroid therapy fails to achieve adequate control, surgical intervention—such as splenectomy—may be recommended.
