What is the function of eosinophils?
Disease description:
I’m going for a comprehensive full-body health checkup. One of the items listed on my lab test report is “eosinophils.” I’d like to know the function of eosinophils.
This type of cell is an essential component of the granulocyte system, derived from bone marrow stem cells, and possesses phagocytic activity—capable of engulfing various substances, including bacteria, antigen-antibody complexes, and foreign particles. Eosinophilia is primarily observed in allergic disorders, such as bronchial asthma, drug allergies, urticaria, angioedema, and hay fever. Certain parasitic infections may also cause eosinophilia, including schistosomiasis, paragonimiasis, and filariasis. Additionally, some dermatological conditions—such as pemphigus, exfoliative dermatitis, or eczema—can lead to elevated eosinophil counts.
