How long should a mercury thermometer be left in the armpit?
Disease description:
I feel feverish and would like to take my temperature with a thermometer. How long should I hold a mercury thermometer under my armpit?
A mercury thermometer typically requires about 5 minutes for an axillary (underarm) temperature reading. If fever symptoms occur, a mercury thermometer can be used to measure the axillary temperature. If the temperature is below 38°C, physical cooling methods may be employed for management. If the temperature exceeds 38°C, oral acetaminophen is usually recommended for fever reduction; additionally, maintaining adequate hydration by drinking plenty of water is advised.
