What does it mean to have a high monocyte count?
Disease description:
Recently, I went to the hospital for a routine physical examination, and my doctor informed me that my monocyte count is elevated. I’d like to know what causes an elevated monocyte count.
Monocytes are relatively large cells in human blood, but their numbers are typically low and usually lack specific clinical significance. However, an abnormal increase in monocyte count may reflect a physiological stress response—for instance, triggered by emotional stress, excitement, overeating, or intense physical exercise—leading to a transient, stress-induced elevation. Nevertheless, this finding should always be interpreted in conjunction with the values of other blood components to assess overall hematological status.
