Manifestations of Digitalis Toxicity
Disease description:
Today, a friend mentioned that some people experienced digitalis toxicity. I’d like to learn more—what are the clinical manifestations of digitalis toxicity?
Digitalis toxicity is most notably characterized by cardiac arrhythmias, resulting from increased myocardial excitability and conduction system blockade. The most common arrhythmias include ventricular premature beats, bidirectional ventricular tachycardia, nonparoxysmal junctional tachycardia, atrial premature beats, atrial fibrillation, and atrioventricular (AV) block. Digitalis toxicity may also cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, as well as visual disturbances—including xanthopsia (yellow vision) and chloropsia (green vision). Upon suspicion of toxicity, digitalis administration must be discontinued immediately.
