Disease description:

I have mild depression. Online sources suggest that fluoxetine is quite effective, but I’m still somewhat hesitant. Could you please explain fluoxetine’s mechanism of action and therapeutic effects?

Fluoxetine is indicated for the treatment of depression, including depression accompanied by anxiety, as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anorexia nervosa. Due to its low affinity for adrenergic, histaminergic, and cholinergic receptors, it exhibits relatively weak anticholinergic, antihistaminergic, and antiadrenergic effects, resulting in fewer adverse reactions. It is well absorbed after oral administration, readily crosses the blood–brain barrier, and is also excreted in breast milk. The antidepressant effect typically becomes apparent after approximately four weeks of treatment; therefore, use is recommended only under the guidance of a physician.
