There are numerous causes of numbness in the big toe, with the following being the most common: 1. **Lumbar disc herniation**: Sensation in the big toe is innervated by the L5 and S1 nerve roots. In cases of L5–S1 disc herniation, the protruding intervertebral disc compresses these nerve roots, resulting in numbness in the corresponding dermatomal area—namely, the big toe. 2. **Wearing high-heeled shoes (especially pointed-toe styles)**: Such footwear often constricts the forefoot, impairing local blood circulation and leading to numbness in the big toe. 3. **Flat feet**: Individuals with flat feet—particularly when combined with hallux valgus—may experience big toe numbness after prolonged walking or running. 4. **Peripheral neuropathy**: Idiopathic peripheral neuropathy can also manifest as numbness in the big toe.
