Dr. Gao Zongen
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune disorder that damages the peripheral nerves or spinal nerve roots, and is a relatively common demyelinating neuropathy. Its precise etiology remains unclear but is thought to be triggered by certain viral infections—such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae or Epstein–Barr virus—or associated with impaired immune function in affected individuals. Clinical manifestations may include limb paralysis and paresthesia; in severe cases, patients may develop dysphagia and aspiration while drinking. Treatment options include intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) administration or plasma exchange.
