Can individuals with “panda blood” (Rh-negative blood type) have children?
Disease description:
I have a female friend who is planning to get pregnant and have a baby soon, but her blood type is “panda blood.” Can people with “panda blood” have children?
Individuals with “panda blood” can have children. “Panda blood” refers to the Rh-negative blood type, which is fully compatible with pregnancy and childbirth. However, because Rh-negative blood is extremely rare, it is advisable to donate blood to a blood bank prior to pregnancy to ensure an adequate supply of compatible blood for potential future use. Additionally, prenatal care should be intensified during pregnancy—particularly after 20 weeks’ gestation, when testing for blood group incompatibility (e.g., Rh incompatibility) is essential. If antibody titers remain within normal limits, the pregnancy is generally considered low-risk and no excessive concern is warranted. However, abnormal antibody titers may increase the risk of hemolytic disease in the newborn.
