I found out today that I’m pregnant. A friend advised me to go to the hospital for a checkup, and the doctor will also tell me my due date. What exactly is a due date?

The estimated due date (EDD) refers to the day when the fetus is expected to have fully developed and be ready for birth. The EDD typically corresponds to 40 weeks of gestation. It is calculated based on the first day of the mother’s last menstrual period (LMP). However, the EDD is not an exact prediction of the delivery date; only about 5% of women deliver on their estimated due date. This inaccuracy arises because ovulation—and thus conception—can occur earlier or later than average, making it difficult for most women to pinpoint the precise time of conception.
