Sleep-talking, also known as somniloquy, is a common phenomenon experienced by many individuals. During sleep, people often dream and may speak, sing, or laugh/cry aloud. Sometimes, the speech is coherent and forms complete sentences or even extended narratives; in rare cases, individuals may even engage in responsive dialogue if someone speaks to them while they are asleep. Others may produce only fragmented, unintelligible utterances or disjointed phrases lacking grammatical structure. Experiencing excessive psychological stress over a period of time can easily carry that stress into sleep, resulting in frequent episodes of sleep-talking. Consuming stimulants such as coffee or cola before bedtime may also predispose individuals to sleep-talking, as the active compounds in these beverages stimulate the central nervous system. Similarly, extreme physical fatigue during the day can lead to recurrent sleep-talking at night. Additionally, individuals with deficiencies in qi (vital energy) and blood are more prone to sleep-talking, as insufficient nourishment impairs the function of vital organs—including the heart and spleen—thereby disrupting normal sleep physiology.
