What Are the Manifestations of Intellectual Disability in Children?

Disease description:

My friend married a close relative, and their child—now three years old—still drools excessively and has not yet begun speaking. I suspect the child may have an intellectual disability. What are the common signs of intellectual disability in children?

Signs of intellectual disability in children include delayed responses to stimuli; sometimes prolonged stimulation is required to elicit crying. Crying may be high-pitched and weak, and facial expressions appear dull or vacant. Hand movements are sluggish, and the child cannot visually track moving objects nearby. Additional symptoms may include bruxism (teeth grinding) and excessive drooling. The child is unable to voluntarily grasp objects with either hand. When supported by an adult, the child’s legs cannot bear weight or support the body. Language development is delayed; the child shows little interest in interacting with others and displays indifference or lack of curiosity toward surrounding objects and events.
