Common Treatment Methods for Guillain-Barré Syndrome
Disease description:
I sometimes experience significant stiffness in my lower limbs upon waking in the morning; initially, this would resolve after a bit of movement, so I didn’t pay much attention to it. Recently, however, stiffness has also developed in my upper limbs and neck. After medical evaluation, I was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). What are the standard treatments for Guillain-Barré syndrome?
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) can be treated with corticosteroids, high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), plasma exchange (plasmapheresis), and appropriate neurotrophic medications—these are all established therapeutic approaches for GBS. With active treatment, the majority of patients have a favorable prognosis: mild cases typically improve within 1–3 months and achieve full recovery within several months to one year. However, some patients may experience varying degrees of residual sequelae, such as limb weakness, muscle atrophy, and foot drop.
