How is chronic otitis media treated?
Disease description:
My husband mentioned today that his ears have been itchy for some time, and there’s also purulent discharge. After visiting the hospital, he was diagnosed with chronic otitis media. How should this be treated?
Chronic otitis media can initially be treated by cleansing the ear with hydrogen peroxide, followed by topical administration of a combination of antibiotics and corticosteroids. This approach often improves otorrhea (ear discharge). Oral antibiotics—such as amoxicillin-clavulanate—may also be prescribed concurrently. If symptoms persist despite medical therapy, further evaluation at a hospital is recommended; surgical intervention may be necessary in some cases.
