How is Guillain-Barré Syndrome Treated?
Disease description:
Recently, I’ve been feeling weak in all four limbs, with the weakness being roughly symmetrical on both sides. After visiting the hospital for evaluation, the doctor diagnosed me with Guillain-Barré syndrome. How is Guillain-Barré syndrome treated?
The most dangerous aspect of Guillain-Barré syndrome is the potential development of respiratory muscle paralysis. Therefore, maintaining a patent airway is critical. If patients develop tachypnea or difficulty with oxygenation, a tracheostomy may be performed surgically to assist breathing, or mechanical ventilation may be initiated. Additionally, if patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome develop dysphagia, nasogastric tube placement is required to ensure adequate nutritional support.
