Pinworm infection may occur due to ingestion of food contaminated by pests such as flies or mosquitoes, or from consuming food that has not been thoroughly washed or cooked. Severe environmental contamination—leading to the presence of pinworm eggs on surfaces including air, bed linens, utensils, clothing, and toilet seats—can also result in infection. Additionally, contact with animal feces or fur containing pinworm eggs increases the risk of infection.
