Periostitis of the lower leg is typically caused by chronic, repetitive traction or excessive mechanical stress on the periosteum of the lower leg, leading to edema and inflammatory response. Frequent squatting and rising, or engaging in running and jumping activities over a prolonged period, may irritate the periosteum of the lower leg, resulting in an aseptic inflammation. Alternatively, it may arise from sudden, intense physical activity after a prolonged period of inactivity, causing microtears or injury to the periosteum covering the tibia and fibula. Prompt medical evaluation at a hospital and adherence to physician-prescribed treatment are essential.
