Hand swelling may be caused by conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or dermatomyositis, as well as systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and other connective tissue diseases. It is typically characterized by morning stiffness, difficulty with flexion and extension, and a sensation of tightness or swelling—often accompanied by localized joint swelling and deformity. Additionally, hand swelling and associated symptoms—including bilateral hand numbness and other discomfort—may arise from diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
