What is “square skull”?
Disease description:
My baby is now five months old. I’ve noticed that his head isn’t as round as those of other babies the same age—it appears somewhat square-shaped. What exactly is “square skull”?
Square-shaped skull is a manifestation of abnormal cranial bone development in infants. Children with square-shaped skull typically exhibit frontal bossing (prominence of the forehead), a flattened and elongated vertex, giving the head a rectangular appearance; head circumference may remain unchanged. This condition is commonly caused by neonatal calcium deficiency. Recovery tends to be slow, especially in younger infants. Supplementation with vitamin D and regular sun exposure can gradually alleviate the condition. However, if no improvement is observed over an extended period, prompt medical evaluation at a hospital is recommended to prevent potential complications.
