Potassium chloride is a colorless, elongated rhombic crystal or a fine white crystalline powder. Its appearance resembles table salt; it is odorless and has a salty taste. It is commonly used as an additive in low-sodium salt and mineral water. Its primary therapeutic use is for various types of arrhythmias—particularly ventricular arrhythmias caused by potassium deficiency—or for the prevention and treatment of hypokalemia. Potassium chloride helps prevent arrhythmias. In patients with frequent, multifocal premature beats or rapid arrhythmias induced by digitalis toxicity, intravenous potassium chloride injection may be administered to alleviate symptoms. During administration, the infusion rate must be strictly controlled; excessively rapid administration may provoke adverse reactions. When administering potassium chloride intravenously, serum electrolyte levels should be closely monitored. For optimal safety and efficacy, potassium chloride should be used only under the guidance of a physician. Potassium chloride also helps prevent hypokalemia. Potassium is an essential electrolyte in the human body and the predominant cation in intracellular fluid. It plays a critical role in maintaining intracellular osmotic pressure.
