What does elevated serum alkaline phosphatase mean?
Disease description:
My friend’s test results showed elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP). I’d like to ask—what does elevated serum alkaline phosphatase mean?
Elevated serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) may reflect either a physiological or a pathological condition. In general, elevated serum ALP is commonly observed—and considered normal—in pregnant women and adolescents undergoing blood tests. Pathologically, elevated serum ALP is frequently associated with hepatobiliary disorders, such as bile duct stones, cholangiocarcinoma, or cholangitis. Additionally, certain bone diseases—including bone tumors and rickets—can also lead to increased ALP levels.
