Disease description:

Recently, I engaged in a one-night stand while intoxicated and did not use a condom. I’m now worried about contracting HIV and would like to know whether people living with HIV can marry and have children.

People living with HIV/AIDS may marry and have children. According to current national laws in China, there is no legal prohibition against marriage for individuals infected with HIV. Generally, as long as the HIV-positive individual discloses their status to their prospective spouse prior to marriage—and the prospective spouse consents to this fact—marriage is permitted. However, consistent and correct use of protective measures (e.g., condoms) during sexual intercourse is essential to prevent transmission to the uninfected partner. For women living with HIV, pregnancy is generally not recommended due to the risk of mother-to-child transmission. For men living with HIV, their female partners may become pregnant and give birth; under appropriate medical management—including antiretroviral therapy for the father, preconception counseling, and adherence to safe conception practices—the risk of transmitting HIV to the child is negligible.
