Can neonatal dacryocystitis resolve spontaneously?
Disease description:
A friend’s newborn baby has developed dacryocystitis (inflammation of the nasolacrimal sac). On behalf of my friend, I would like to ask: Can dacryocystitis in newborns resolve spontaneously?
In most cases, neonatal dacryocystitis resolves spontaneously. The primary cause is incomplete development of the lacrimal sac in newborns, leading to nasolacrimal duct obstruction. As the lacrimal sac matures fully, symptoms of dacryocystitis typically improve. However, in some newborns, dacryocystitis is pathological and generally does not resolve spontaneously. Therefore, when dacryocystitis is observed in a newborn, it is recommended to seek medical evaluation at a hospital to confirm the underlying cause; treatment options and medications should then be selected under the guidance of a physician.
