What does mydriasis mean?
Disease description:
Today, while looking in the mirror, I noticed that my pupils appeared unusually large. After visiting the hospital for an examination, the doctor diagnosed me with mydriasis. Could you please explain what “mydriasis” means?
Under natural light, the normal pupillary diameter ranges from 2.5 to 4 mm; a diameter exceeding 5 mm is generally considered mydriasis (pupillary dilation). Mydriasis may result from ocular trauma, glaucoma, optic nerve atrophy, or other diseases, or it may be induced by medications. In critically ill patients, bilateral mydriasis with absent pupillary light reflex—i.e., no constriction in response to light—may indicate imminent death.
