Disease description:

My child has developed numerous red spots on the body—I’m unsure which type of purpura it is. How can I distinguish between Henoch–Schönlein purpura (HSP) and immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in children?

Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) and immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in children can be differentiated based on their clinical symptoms and pathological features. In the early stage of HSP, patients typically present with reddish-brown papules that cause irregular pain and may be accompanied by swelling, diarrhea, and melena. In contrast, ITP manifests as irregular, patchy petechiae or ecchymoses on the skin, along with systemic symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and menorrhagia in adolescent girls.
