How to Handle a Broken Mercury Thermometer
Disease description:
Recently, I was taking my child’s temperature when, accidentally, the mercury thermometer broke. How should I handle a broken mercury thermometer?
If a mercury thermometer breaks, first open the windows to ventilate the area. Wear a mask and rubber gloves, then carefully collect the mercury beads using a stiff piece of cardboard and transfer them into a sealed container or plastic bag. Label the container clearly and hand it over to qualified professionals for proper disposal. Finally, thoroughly vacuum the area—or alternatively, sprinkle sulfur powder onto the floor and into floor cracks to help absorb any residual mercury. Avoid occupying the room temporarily; ideally, maintain ventilation for at least 24 hours.
