What is acute Guillain-Barré syndrome?
Disease description:
I’ve recently experienced generalized weakness and am concerned it might be acute Guillain-Barré syndrome. What exactly is acute Guillain-Barré syndrome?
Acute Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is primarily a demyelinating disorder affecting the peripheral nerves. It is an immune-mediated disease, and its onset may be associated with viral infections or *Campylobacter jejuni* infection. Clinical manifestations commonly include symmetrical, flaccid paralysis of the limbs, generalized weakness, dysphagia, and bilateral leg weakness. Treatment options include intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) or plasma exchange. The prognosis is generally favorable.
