What Causes Pelvic Infection?
Disease description:
I’ve been feeling uncomfortable in my lower abdomen recently. When I went to the hospital, the doctor diagnosed me with pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). What causes this condition?
Pelvic infection may occur due to genital tract inflammation—such as cervicitis or vaginitis—where severe inflammation spreads upward into the pelvis, resulting in pelvic infection. It may also arise following childbirth or abortion, when retained intrauterine tissue leads to secondary infection that extends beyond the uterus into the pelvic cavity. Additionally, procedures such as tubal irrigation may cause infection if performed improperly, introducing pathogens into the body.
