Clinically, sharp bilateral costophrenic angles are a normal finding. If imaging reveals blunting—rather than sharpness—of the bilateral costophrenic angles, this is typically due to pleural effusion, such as that associated with tuberculosis or pleuritis. Such blunting usually represents a pathological change. Therefore, sharp bilateral costophrenic angles constitute a normal radiographic appearance on chest X-ray and are not indicative of disease.
