Disease description:

Today, while at work, I heard a colleague mention that one of his friends developed puerperal fever just a few days after giving birth and unfortunately could not be resuscitated. I’d like to learn more about what “puerperal fever” means.

Puerperal fever is primarily caused by invasion of pathogenic microorganisms into the genital tract during the puerperium, leading to localized and systemic infection. Its main symptoms include pain, fever, and abnormal lochia. Additional symptoms vary depending on the site and extent of infection; for example, uterine infection may present with lower abdominal pain, increased vaginal discharge, chills, headache, and leukocytosis.
