Thickened and hollowed toenails are generally considered symptoms of onychomycosis. Patients should visit a hospital for a nail fungal smear test. If diagnosed with onychomycosis, antifungal medications such as itraconazole capsules may be prescribed. Patients should follow their physician’s instructions and take the medication regularly; local symptoms will gradually return to normal. As itraconazole is a lipophilic drug, it is best taken after meals.
