Disease description:

I recently underwent a physical examination at the hospital, during which liver function tests revealed elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels. I’m somewhat concerned—what are the potential health risks associated with elevated AST?

Elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST) indicates abnormal liver function and may suggest liver injury, such as acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, or alcoholic liver disease. An increase in AST reflects hepatocyte damage or necrosis. Persistent elevation of AST without recovery signifies progressive hepatocyte injury and extensive necrosis, which may exacerbate inflammation and lead to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, or even hepatocellular carcinoma.
