There are various treatment options for manic-depressive psychosis (bipolar disorder). Generally, psychological interventions—such as supportive psychotherapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy—are employed. When necessary, mood stabilizers and antipsychotic medications may be prescribed under medical supervision; commonly used drugs include lamotrigine and olanzapine. Hospitalization may be required if a depressive episode occurs.
