What Does Elevated Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy Indicate?

Disease description:

I’ve had a particularly severe cold recently, and it hasn’t improved for quite some time, which has made me anxious enough to seek medical evaluation. My doctor informed me that my alanine aminotransferase (ALT) level is elevated. I’d like to know: What could cause elevated ALT levels during the late stages of pregnancy?

Elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in the third trimester of pregnancy may be related to medications taken during pregnancy—for example, prenatal vitamins can cause ALT elevation. ALT is a marker of liver function; thus, elevated ALT indicates abnormal liver function. If the pregnant woman has no other symptoms, temporary discontinuation of the suspected medication followed by repeat testing is usually sufficient.
