Is it normal to have no lunula (half-moon shape) on the fingernails?
Disease description:
Recently, I noticed that my fingernails look different from others’—they lack the lunula (the pale, crescent-shaped area at the nail base). Is it normal for fingernails to have no lunula?
The absence of lunulae (the crescent-shaped white areas at the base of fingernails) is generally normal; currently, this single sign cannot be used to assess overall health. The lunula represents the visible, translucent portion of the nail matrix located at the proximal nail fold. Due to individual anatomical variation, not everyone exhibits visible lunulae. In some individuals, the lunulae are prominent and relatively pinkish-red, whereas in others they may be faint or absent—often because the cuticle or proximal nail fold’s keratinized tissue obscures the underlying nail matrix.
