Disease description:

We’ve already had two children and don’t plan to have any more, but we’d prefer not to undergo tubal ligation. Our doctors all recommend getting an IUD inserted. Could you please explain what “getting an IUD” means for women?

Dr. Yang Qiong
Intrauterine device (IUD) insertion is currently one of the most common, safe, and effective contraceptive methods. It involves placing an intrauterine contraceptive device—commonly known as an “IUD” or “contraceptive ring”—into the uterine cavity to prevent pregnancy. IUD insertion can be scheduled within one week after menstruation ends; sexual intercourse should be avoided for two weeks following the procedure. Generally, no adverse reactions occur; however, if any woman experiences adverse effects, she should seek prompt medical evaluation and treatment.
