Efficacy of Fructus Aurantii Immaturus and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae
Disease description:
Today, I went to the hospital to get a prescription for some traditional Chinese herbal medicines. I recognized only two of the herbs: Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Zhishi) and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu). However, I’m not sure about their therapeutic effects, so I’d like to ask: What are the medicinal properties and functions of Zhishi and Baizhu?
The therapeutic effects of Fructus Aurantii Immaturus (Zhishi) and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Baizhu) differ. Zhishi promotes gastric function and aids digestion. It is commonly used to treat abdominal pain and discomfort caused by dietary indiscretion, consumption of raw or cold foods, or overeating. In contrast, Baizhu strengthens the spleen and augments Qi, while also exerting effects of arresting spontaneous sweating, stabilizing pregnancy, drying dampness, and promoting diuresis. It is typically indicated for symptoms such as poor appetite due to spleen deficiency, edema, and spontaneous sweating.
