In general, blood tests for twins are performed around day 40 of pregnancy. If human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels are found to be significantly elevated, a twin pregnancy may be preliminarily suspected. After six weeks of gestation, ultrasound examination can detect primitive cardiac tube pulsations within the uterine cavity; the presence of two separate primitive cardiac tube pulsations typically confirms a twin pregnancy.
