Acute testicular torsion may occur in patients with genitourinary diseases, such as orchitis or epididymitis. Additionally, external trauma—such as a kick to the scrotum—can trigger a stress-induced evasive response of the testicle, predisposing it to spasm and subsequent torsion. Furthermore, acute testicular torsion may also result from temperature changes that induce spasm of the smooth muscle in the spermatic cord.
