What Causes Acute Testicular Torsion?
Disease description:
After playing basketball yesterday afternoon, I suddenly experienced scrotal pain and was diagnosed with acute testicular torsion at the hospital. What causes acute testicular torsion?
There are several specific causes of acute testicular torsion. First, temperature plays a role: drastic temperature changes can trigger spasm of the smooth muscle in the spermatic cord, predisposing the spermatic cord and testis to torsion. Second, genitourinary infections—such as orchitis, epididymitis, and funiculitis—may also contribute; if left untreated or uncontrolled, these conditions can lead to acute testicular torsion. Additionally, blunt trauma or physical injury to the scrotum is another significant, non-negligible precipitating factor.
