Disease description:

I’ve been hospitalized for pancreatitis over the past two days. Today, my doctor informed me that my carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) test came back positive. I’d like to know: does a positive CEA result mean I have cancer?

A positive carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) test does not necessarily indicate cancer; it serves only as a reference marker. A “positive” CEA result means the level is above the normal range—typically 0–5.3 ng/mL—though in smokers, the upper limit may be slightly higher, up to 6.2 ng/mL. Elevated CEA levels can also occur due to inflammatory conditions and are not always indicative of malignancy. Therefore, a comprehensive evaluation—including tests such as colonoscopy—is essential to identify the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment.
