Bed bugs possess certain toxic properties. Upon biting, they release a substance that stimulates vasodilation, leading to skin manifestations such as papules, wheals, and even vesicles or extensive erythema and swelling, often accompanied by pain and pruritus. Scratching the affected area with hands may lead to secondary infection. After being bitten by bed bugs, patients may apply topical medications—such as dexamethasone cream—to help alleviate symptoms.
