Can people with gout eat pineapple?
Disease description:
I’ve had a gout flare-up these past few days, and my foot has been constantly painful. As a result, I’m paying special attention to my diet and avoiding anything that might worsen my condition. I noticed that pineapple seems quite healthy—may I ask: Is it safe for people with gout to eat pineapple?
Gout patients may consume pineapple in moderation, but must avoid overconsumption. Although pineapple is rich in nutritional value—including various vitamins as well as minerals such as selenium, calcium, and phosphorus—and also contains some protein and dietary fiber, it is also high in fructose and glucose. Fructose and glucose are among the factors contributing to elevated uric acid levels in the body; therefore, gout patients should limit their intake of pineapple. Pineapple aids protein digestion and promotes gastrointestinal motility, making it beneficial for patients with poor appetite—helping stimulate appetite, regulate qi flow, and alleviate greasiness. Most fruits are safe for gout patients to consume; however, they should maintain dietary diversity and avoid excessive intake of any single fruit.
