What Causes Tinea Manuum and Tinea Pedis?
Disease description:
I am 36 years old this year. Recently, my feet have been itchy and developed papules—could this be tinea pedis (athlete’s foot)? What causes tinea manuum and tinea pedis?
Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) is a superficial fungal infection affecting the hands and feet; its occurrence is closely associated with hygiene conditions, environmental factors, and the individual’s immune status. For example, contact with clothing or towels used by infected individuals may lead to transmission, particularly when host immunity is compromised or hygiene standards are poor. Prolonged exposure to a damp environment can also predispose individuals to cutaneous fungal infection. Clinical manifestations of tinea pedis include vesicles, erosion, scaling, papules, and pruritus. If tinea pedis is diagnosed, antifungal therapy is recommended.
