Differences Between Milia and Flat Warts

The primary distinction between milia and flat warts lies in their etiologies: Milia—medically termed “milia” (singular: milium)—are caused by abnormal lipid metabolism, whereas flat warts are viral infections classified as proliferative dermatoses. Additionally, clinical manifestations differ: As the name suggests, flat warts appear flattened, feel smooth to the touch, and have well-defined borders; in contrast, milia are conical in shape, often white, and may cause a pricking sensation upon palpation—typically expressible with gentle extraction using a sterile needle.
