Disease description:

I am 23 years old this year. Recently, small papules have appeared on my skin. My classmates suggested they might be milia or flat warts. What are the differences between milia and flat warts?

The primary distinction between milia and flat warts lies in their etiologies: Milia—medically termed “milia” (singular: milium)—are caused by abnormal lipid metabolism, whereas flat warts are viral infections classified as proliferative dermatoses. Additionally, clinical manifestations differ: As the name suggests, flat warts appear flattened, feel smooth to the touch, and have well-defined borders; in contrast, milia are conical in shape, often white, and may cause a pricking sensation upon palpation—typically expressible with gentle extraction using a sterile needle. Patients are advised to seek timely medical evaluation and treatment to prevent disease progression due to delays.
