Disease description:

I’ve had bromhidrosis since childhood—my armpits emit a strong, pungent odor that is extremely unpleasant. I’m constantly worried others will notice it. Could you please tell me: is bromhidrosis contagious?

Fox odor (bromhidrosis) is not contagious—it is a non-infectious skin condition. It is associated with genetic predisposition; specifically, it commonly results from abnormal secretion of the apocrine glands. Individuals with a family history of fox odor—such as those whose parents or one parent have the condition—are at increased risk of developing it themselves. Fox odor typically manifests as an unpleasant odor in the axillary (underarm) region, which may worsen during or after vigorous physical activity.
