Is an allergy test required before anesthesia?
Disease description:
I’m currently preparing for pregnancy and recently went to the hospital for a check-up. The doctor diagnosed me with cervical polyps and recommended polypectomy. Anesthesia is required before the procedure—do I need to undergo an allergy test prior to anesthesia?
Whether preoperative anesthesia requires an allergy test depends on the specific anesthetic agent to be used and the patient’s individual circumstances. Normally, only procaine requires a skin test; routine allergy testing is not performed for other anesthetics. However, patients with known allergic constitutions generally require allergy testing. Prior to surgery, patients should inform both the surgeon and the anesthesiologist about their medical history and personal conditions, enabling the medical team to make safer and more effective preparations.
