Disease description:

I have pain in my right abdomen today—could it be appendicitis? Could you please tell me the exact location of the appendix?

Dr. Shen Yonghua
In most individuals, the appendix is located in the lower right abdomen, near the right iliac fossa. The appendix arises from the base of the cecum and occupies a relatively unique anatomical position; however, its location can vary. Less commonly, it may be situated in the mid-right abdomen, upper abdomen, or even the left upper abdomen. In early-stage appendicitis, abdominal pain typically begins as intermittent, poorly localized discomfort around the umbilicus and in the upper abdomen. After several hours, the pain usually shifts to become a persistent ache in the right lower abdomen.
