Is sore throat and pain a sign of early HIV infection?
Disease description:
A colleague I work with has HIV/AIDS—I only learned about it from other coworkers. Recently, I’ve had persistent sore throat and am worried about being infected. Is a sore or swollen throat an early symptom of HIV?
Sore throat and swelling are early symptoms of HIV infection, but not all cases of sore throat and swelling are caused by HIV/AIDS. Generally, HIV is primarily transmitted through blood, sexual contact, and mother-to-child transmission. During the early stage following HIV infection, individuals may experience acute symptoms such as dizziness, headache, fatigue, night sweats, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sore throat. However, definitive diagnosis of HIV/AIDS requires specific laboratory testing.
