What Are the Differences Between Epilepsy and Tic Disorders in Children?
Disease description:
My son has recently experienced occasional full-body convulsions. I’m unsure whether this is epilepsy or Tourette syndrome. What are the differences between pediatric epilepsy and Tourette syndrome?
There are several distinctions between pediatric epilepsy and tic disorders. Pediatric epilepsy results from excessive neuronal discharges; electroencephalography (EEG) typically reveals abnormalities—such as epileptiform discharges—whereas EEG findings in tic disorders are usually normal. Some children with epilepsy experience altered consciousness during seizures, whereas individuals with tic disorders remain fully conscious. Epileptic seizures may occur during sleep, whereas tics generally subside during sleep.
